I Have a Dream

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

Today is Martin Luther King Day, a day that many will spend reflecting on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Social media will be filled with inspiring quotes about equality, love, and dreams of a world in which, as Dr. King wished, we are judged not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.

It is almost 52 years since Martin Luther King Jr. famously stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. It became a call to action, peaceful action. We are reminded of his words today when we see peaceful protests and protests that are not peaceful. We are reminded of his message of equality but also of his messages about love and forgiveness.

Today we will see him quoted in memes shared across social media or catch snippets of his famous speech on television. Some may come across a story reflecting his life and engage in discussions about how far we’ve come or about how far we still have to go. Some may be disheartened that we are still having those conversations but I’m not. Words have an incredible ability to create movement. I believe that with every conversation there is hope. I believe that with every meme shared and every like button hit for some inspiring thing he said, we are that much closer to realizing his dream.
